An optician is an individual who can be found working in the field of eye correction in the field of medicine. These individuals are trained to fill prescriptions, they are known for making and designing lenses, designing eyeglasses along with other eye correction designs. An optician will use a variety of different equipment to ensure that their clients needs are best met. They will check their eyes and see what range they fall into. They  will use a variety of instruments that are quite complex to run thorough examinations on a patient and ensure that all the information that they gather is accurate to make sure that a patients needs are being met.

Education

In the United States an optician is certified by the American Board of Opticianry to be able to fill prescription orders.  They will have to go through a series of tests and then finally pass the boards to legally be able to do the job.  Now, in some states, an optician is not required to have a license to make eyewear.  Typically, you will find that many eye doctors can also be found designing and creating their own eye ware, so many suggest that an optician receive a license so that they can compete with eye doctors for business.  

Typically, a lot of opticians will learn their skills through formal training received in programs.  One of the most popular places for an optician to receive their skills through a technical college.  Many two year colleges offer programs in opticiany.  An optician can go through one of these two year programs and graduate with an Associates degree in opticianry.  There is also the options of going through a one year program where you will graduate with a certificate.  Typically, you will find that these programs and courses will offer classes such as optical math, physics and they will have students work with the equipment and tools needed to succeed in their jobs.
